Went to a Lakers game the other night. Thanks to a friend’s hookup, I sat in the 2nd row, which is about as close as I’ll ever really get to a Laker girl.

Three point play.

Life has become far more interesting now that I’ve gained the ability to make frozen Slurpee-ish drinks with my Cuisinart Ice Cream Maker.

I don’t understand stories like these. A woman making 70K a year gets laid off, burns through her savings in a matter of weeks, and is struggling due to her interest only mortgage payments.

And she used to be a loan processor?!

Maybe that’s why she got laid off.

I hate to make light of what is obviously a crappy situation, but this CNN fluff piece just makes me angry. She bitches about paying into the system and not getting anything in return, but then again, SHE OWNS A HOUSE IN CALIFORNIA.

Sell the house, move into an apartment, pay down your credit cards, and start budgeting. I can’t believe these middle class idiots are eating into the welfare system when there are still Katrina victims to help.

Watched Mean Streets tonight.  It was like Scorsese’s version of American Graffiti.

So culturally relevant, but boring as hell and full of music of the times.

I’ve been receiving new credit cards for an account that I hardly use anymore even though my current card hasn’t expired yet. Today I called the credit card company to see why. Apparently it’s part of their program to get me to use my account again. They just send me a new card every 6 months hoping I take the hint.

I saw this as a bit of a security risk and asked them to stop sending me new cards. The rep then offered to close my account, which I declined because once it closes, it’s off the credit report. The rep did not relent, noting that it’s very expensive for them to keep an open account that isn’t being used.

Well cry me a fucking river credit card company. Maybe if you unpucker your asshole a little bit and offer some better rewards, I’d start using your card again. I’m tempted to charge an item under a dollar every year or so just to keep the account active.

I’ve also been told that it makes me look spry.

Tonight I saw some people that I haven’t seen in awhile.  Got complimented on the haircut by two dudes and a married woman.

This haircut is totally paying off.

Backing Up The Mac

So I’ve been thinking about backup strategies for backing up my Macbook Pro. I already have an external drive attached to my desktop (which is essentially a server now) and can probably set up my Mac so that it mounts a network drive each time I jump back onto my home network using something like MarcoPolo and just use Time Machine.

Or I could look into getting an ExpressCard Media Card Reader and backup to SDHC cards, like tape.

External Drive Pros:
+No tape/card swapping means less human error.
+Can do full system-wide backup (need bigger external).

External Drive Cons:
-Must be on home network for backup to run.
-Drive overwrites itself, so limited long term archive.
-More expensive short term.

ExpressCard Pros:
+Can backup on the road.
+Can do long term archiving by pulling media card out of backup set.
+Adds media reader capability to laptop.
+Finally a use for the ExpressCard slot.

ExpressCard Cons:
-Can’t do full backups and can only backup up to 16GB increments.
-Possibly more expensive long term.
-How long does media last?

I’ll probably just end up doing both for redundancy.

So I finally stepped out of the stone age in terms of cell phones and pulled the trigger on the Nokia E51.  I normally just get the free phone that comes with the phone plan, but now that wi-fi capable phones are more prevalent, I decided that I needed to purchase me a slice of the future.

Of course, there was always the iPhone route, but the E51 was about half as expensive (after applying all of my Amazon credit), less bulky, and less likely to get me mugged when I use it.   Also Symbian OS means more applications and for the iPhone to really consolidate my phone and iPod down to one device, it would have to have way more than 16GB of storage.Just need to see if it plays well with the 3G signals in the Valley and in Westwood.  Not that I really need it to, but it’d be nice if it did.

So I’ve been digging these frozen ramen packages that I found at my local 99 Ranch Market. Problem is that one serving contains more than the daily recommended value of sodium.

Lots of sodium

So far I’ve just avoided drinking the soup. Not sure how long I’ll last before my heart explodes…with ramen-y goodness.
